Old Souls – Cold Spring, New York // Oct 2013

The first official stop on our road trip was just a few hours out. While Barrett was guiding in Kamchatka over the summer he was lucky to have James Carroll as a client. Fly fisherman, world traveler, entrepreneur and all around nice dude, James invited us to stop by his new shop in New York on our way through. James and his wife Tara opened a dreamy store last summer in Cold Spring, a little artsy town upstate, situated on the Hudson River. The shop is filled with handmade goodies from around the country, with quite a few from here in Portland! James being a fisherman, it’s naturally stocked with the best in the industry. With gear from Simms and Patagonia, beautiful handmade reels and flies plus hundreds of other gifts and treats. It’s also filled with gorgeous housewares and home goods. From delicious honey to beautiful bags, every Field Notes journal you could need and the perfect Pendleton blanket to curl up under. Old Souls will have you geared up for your next adventure or just fill your home with goods you’ll have for a lifetime. James and Tara even helped me pick out the perfect Benchmade knife for a great Christmas surprise! I have a feeling this place will be a go-to for lots of my gift giving in the future… now if only we can convince them to open a second shop in Portland 😉

From the owner:

“The idea of Old Souls was born about a year ago at a tiny local restaurant over a plate of fried chicken.  Opened in July ‘13, it’s already building out a new, larger space next door.  The shop’s collection focuses on outfitting for field, camp and home with hand picked, quality goods, most of them made in the US.  Larger heritage brands like Filson, Pendleton and Stanley are complimented by smaller makers like Topo Designs, Tanner Goods and Otter Wax.  James is a fly fishing guide and instructor and takes clients out on the famous trout rivers of the Catskills and of course, has a few secret spots of his own that he can’t reveal to the public!” -Tara, Old Souls Brand

Their website is still in the making, but check them out on facebook and if you’re in town stop by the shop and get yourself something beautiful!   61 Main Street, Cold Spring, NY.

p.s Someone buy me that kayak!
