Oregon Dreaming: Part 1

December 15, 2013

In late September Barrett got back to the states after a (very) long three months in Russia Far East working as a guide at the fly fishing lodge The Best of Kamchatka. His return home matched up perfectly with my lease ending in Brooklyn. We had decided a while back we wanted to go on a giant road trip west together and that this would be the perfect time for both of us. With out really making it sound too official, we also decided it was a perfect time for us to explore living in the Pacific North West together. So, without being too long-winded, the photos to follow are of our journey from New York City to Portland, Oregon, over a course of 5 weeks.

We started the journey, ironically, by going home. B and I went to high school together. Being from neighboring towns has always made it easy to visit our homes, together. We decided to spend a week before really hitting the road with our families. We had ice cream from The UConn Dairy bar about 10 times. Went fishing in every little body of water we found and took our leaf peeping very seriously. The weather was beautiful and warm. We said lots of goodbyes and ate way more food than any two people should in a week.

We would be driving xc in a truck purchased in Brooklyn right after Russia. The plan was to mostly camp and sometimes when necessary sleep in the truck. So we got to building a bed. Everything we owned needed to fit in the truck so we made plenty of storage underneath and latches to access things in the back. We sacrificed head room for a few extra inches of space and made a nook for the cooler which would serve as our fridge for the next month or so. Molly the dog helped with everything. Once the bed was done we spent days packing and repacking until we narrowed it down to essentials and called it good enough. We were ready for departure!
